Merkel advises on the corona situation in the German hotspots

– –

The number of infections in Germany continues to rise. Chancellor Angela Merkel is therefore discussing the current situation and possible measures with the mayors of eleven large cities in a video conference.

The Chancellor is advising the mayors of the largest cities in Germany about the corona situation. Berlin, Frankfurt and Bremen in particular are of concern – but other large cities are also increasingly becoming a problem. Several reasons can be found.

TThe number of new corona infections is increasing every day – and this is currently especially in large cities and metropolitan areas. “The pandemic will be decided in the metropolises,” said Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) recently on ZDF. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is therefore discussing the situation with the mayors of the largest German cities this Friday.

The number of infections has recently risen dramatically, especially in Berlin, Bremen and Frankfurt. As a rule, the incidences of 50 reported new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days are compared. If it is mainly young people who are infected, a high incidence is not a problem for the health system. But: The higher the value, the more difficult it is for the health authorities to trace contacts – and there is a risk of losing control.

While the majority of infections in the summer could be traced back to family or company celebrations or to outbreaks in large companies, care facilities and shared accommodation, this is now often no longer possible. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) speaks of a “diffuse event” in Berlin, triggered by young, international travelers and partiers, “who get infected on the go or at parties and then spread these infections in their households and families”.

The urban confinement certainly plays a certain role. People cannot avoid each other in the same way as in rural areas, for example when they have to use buses, subways or buses.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert justified the conversation between the Chancellor and the mayors with the concern that it could lead to a further diffuse spread. The number of cities that break the threshold of 50 new infections is getting longer every day. Here is an overview:

The problem children

Cities that report more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days in Germany are considered to be risk areas within Germany. Last was in Berlin, Bremen and Frankfurt am Main the case. The Berlin district is currently particularly hard hit Neukölln with an incidence of 133.

Just across the Frankfurt city limits, in the neighboring city Offenbach, the threshold on Friday was 66. In addition to the city of Stuttgart Esslingen (54,6) severely affected.

In Bavaria the city is listed Rosenheim (66.1) is currently the most violent outbreak.

Im Ruhr area the big cities do not yet exceed the limit value, but many neighboring, smaller cities in the metropolitan area: Hamm, Herne and Remscheid.

On the threshold

Scratch in North Rhine-Westphalia Essen (48,4), Duisburg (43,1), Gelsenkirchen (47) and Cologne (49.8) at the risk area threshold. Bochum (32,3), Dortmund (26,3) and Düsseldorf (26,1), with an incidence of over 25, are in a range that requires increased attention.

Hamburg currently reports an incidence of 29.1 within the last seven days. Stuttgart has a value of 43.7, Mannheim 33,8.

The megacity Munich had recently exceeded the limit value, the Bavarian capital is currently recording a little less, namely 42.4 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. Nuremberg also has an increased number of infections with an average of 29.3 positive corona cases per week.

Where the situation remains calm

Cities in the north-east of the republic in particular are currently relatively relaxed thanks to the second wave, but the trend is rising here too. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s largest city is currently doing particularly well Rostock (9.1) there. Report in Saxony Leipzig (12,1) and Dresden (16) new infections at low levels. Also the capital of Lower Saxony Hannover (20.5) remains below the 25 mark.
