The tightened rules to combat the corona pandemic passed by the Hamburg Senate by January 10, 2021 will lead to a change in income situations for many tenant households. Tenants who can no longer afford their housing costs due to the pandemic will continue to have the opportunity to apply for reimbursement of accommodation costs for the next six months until March 31, 2021. The affected tenant households can submit a simplified application for reimbursement of the ongoing accommodation costs to the job center or the responsible basic security office.
The housing cost regulations of the so-called social protection package at a glance:
– Anyone who submits an application or follow-up application for reimbursement of rental costs by March 31, 2021 will not be subject to the asset check for the first 6 months if they declare that they do not have significant assets.
– There is no significant wealth if less than EUR 60,000 is available for the first member of the household and EUR 30,000 for each additional member of the household.
– Expenses for rent and heating are covered in their actual amount.
– It is a simplified procedure so that those affected can receive quick help.

“The changed income situation in the Corona crisis does not release tenants from paying rent. Anyone who can no longer afford the costs should immediately contact the landlord in writing and state the reason for non-payment. It is also important to note that an application to cover the running costs of the accommodation has been submitted to the job center or the basic security office,” says the chairman of the Hamburg tenants’ association, Siegmund Chychla. “Reasonable landlords will show understanding for pandemic-related payment delays,” says Chychla.
