Corona pandemic: Education ministers want to keep schools open

As of: October 8th, 2021 10:56 a.m.

The education ministers of the federal states want to continue to avoid school closings due to Corona. Classroom teaching should be guaranteed and quarantine should only be ordered for a narrow group.

The education ministers of the federal states continue to work to ensure that schools do not close again during the corona pandemic. It is “essential to keep the schools open and to ensure that classroom teaching is permanent,” according to a decision that the ministers took after deliberations in Potsdam.

The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) essentially confirmed the resolutions already formulated in June and August for “regular school operations in the school year 2021/2022”. In the current school year, despite the pandemic and delta variant, it was possible to ensure full and continuous face-to-face teaching in all countries. The right of children and adolescents to education, leisure activities and get-togethers is largely guaranteed without restrictions.

Restrained quarantine policy

The conference also spoke out in favor of a cautious quarantine policy by the health authorities: Even if the mask requirement in schools is largely abolished, quarantine orders “in the interest of reliable classroom teaching” should be limited to actually infected people or close contact persons.

The federal states decide whether or not to wear a mask

In principle, the federal states themselves regulate whether, when and where masks have to be worn in schools. This also applies to tests. The ministerial decision is accordingly openly formulated:

In order to maintain the security gained for school operations, the regular tests for schoolchildren can be continued until further notice.

At the same time, the ministers appeal to adults to be vaccinated and recommend this to schoolchildren over the age of twelve.
