This includes almost 1,100 voluntary repayments totaling 8.2 million euros. 240 repayment claims have so far resulted in repayments totaling around 305,000 euros. The ministry said the investigations are still ongoing. So far, almost 300 reports have been filed on suspicion of subsidy fraud.
Emergency aid was intended to bridge the gap
A total of over 160 million euros in emergency Corona aid was provided in Saarland. A good 23,000 applications were approved at the time. The federal government’s emergency aid was the first aid payment for small businesses and could be applied for in spring 2020 for a three-month funding period. It was intended to secure the economic existence of companies and self-employed people during the crisis and to bridge acute liquidity bottlenecks.
According to the ministry, the start of the official feedback procedure in Saarland was postponed until after the summer holidays in view of the new burdens, especially on self-employed persons, caused by the Whitsun floods. It runs via an internet platform and serves to compare the liquidity bottleneck predicted by recipients at the time.
The Federal Ministry of Economics estimates that a total of around five billion euros in Corona emergency aid was paid out too much shortly after the start of the pandemic in 2020. According to the information, a total of around 13.6 billion euros in federal funds were distributed nationwide for micro-enterprises and self-employed persons. The actual payment was the responsibility of the states.
