For the second day in a row, the number of new coronavirus infections in China hit a new record. A lockdown has been ordered for another six million people, which applies from today.
In China, the number of new corona infections has continued to rise. Authorities recorded another 32,695 confirmed cases in one day. This is the highest level in the country since the start of the pandemic and the second consecutive record. Only yesterday, with 31,444 new infections, the previous daily maximum in April was exceeded.
Larger outbreaks are currently reported from Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang and Chongqing. But hundreds of new cases are registered every day in several other cities as well.
Lockdown in Zhengzhou
As part of its zero-Covid strategy, the country’s leadership continues to implement restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Around the country’s largest iPhone factory in the city of Zhengzhou, where violent protests had recently taken place, more than six million people were placed under lockdown yesterday. It is valid from today for an initial period of five days. More than half of the city’s residents have been affected by the lockdown. For the time being, inner-city residents can only leave the area with a negative corona test and an official permit. It is also advisable to leave the house only in urgent cases.
In eight districts, residents must also be tested for the corona virus every day for five days. The area of the huge iPhone factory, which has been under the strictest corona rules for weeks, is currently excluded from the new lockdown. Workers at the factory took to the streets on Wednesday to protest harsh restrictions and low pay.
