Corona outbreak near Beijing: China sends 500,000 people in Lockdown

Rising infection numbers in Beijing are triggering fears in China that the corona epidemic could flare up again. Outbreak is a market that is also supplied by companies from the Anxin district. Now all residents must stay at home.

Around half a million Chinese who live near Beijing have to go into the lockdown because of a new outbreak of coronavirus. The Chinese authorities say this after the number of new infections in the capital increased again. In the past 24 hours, 14 new infections with the corona virus have been detected. However, the authorities assured that the situation would “improve”.

The lockdown affects the Chinese in Anxin County, 150 kilometers from Beijing. According to the health authority, the place is “completely sealed off and checked”. The residents would have to stay at home. Only one representative per family was allowed to go out to do shopping and get medicine, it said.

The recent infections in Beijing have raised fears of a widespread resurgence of the virus in China. After two months without new infections in Beijing, the number of new infections has risen to 311 since June 11.

Mass tests in and around Beijing

The Xinfadi market in Beijing is believed to be the starting point. According to the authorities, around 200,000 people have visited the market since May 30. Much of Beijing’s fresh produce is traded on the wholesale food market. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, companies from Anxin County also supplied the Xinfadi market with freshwater fish.

Last week, workers from supermarkets and restaurants as well as delivery couriers were tested in large quantities for the corona virus. Beijing residents living in vulnerable neighborhoods were also checked.

The tests should now be extended to all employees of the capital’s beauty and hairdressing salons, reports the Chinese state newspaper Global Times. Beijing official Xu Hejian said on Saturday, “We don’t have time to rest.” Chinese epidemiologist Wu Zunyou, on the other hand, told journalists last week that the outbreak in Beijing had been “brought under control”.
