According to the organization’s spokesperson, infections are more common among vaccinated residents of nursing homes. He has never encountered an outbreak of this magnitude before, but that does not mean that it will not happen. “Not all nursing homes release this kind of information. Mild complaints

Because the residents have only mild complaints, but because it concerns such a vulnerable group, relatively harmless complaints can also be dangerous. A small cough could be “just the last straw” for the health of these people, the spokesman said. “Moreover, it concerns people who are no longer able to indicate exactly what is bothering them. We notice that they cough a little, but we do not know whether they also suffer from their throat, for example. ” The GGD is investigating whether the outbreak in the nursing home was caused by an extra contagious variant of the virus.

Epidemiologist at the LUMC Frits Rosendaal points out that someone can always contract the virus even after vaccination. “It is not that you have some kind of defense shield in front of you, that virus will still just enter your nose.” The vaccine protects against a serious disease course, but we will not be completely rid of the virus until everyone has been injected. “Until then, it remains very important to adhere to the measures.”

It is also important that nursing homes always report outbreaks of the virus among vaccinated residents, says Rosendaal. Older people in nursing homes have had the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, he explains. Just like with other vaccines, so-called trials have been carried out to see how well the vaccine protects. “Old people took part in those trials, but not the very oldest,” said Rosendaal. “A person of 95 with dementia is simply too fragile to participate in such a thing.” More information about what the virus does after inoculating such a person is therefore “very valuable.”
