Two thirds of the clinics expect staff shortages when vaccination starts

On average, 89 percent of clinic employees who deal directly with patients have been vaccinated against corona at least twice. This was the result of a survey by the German Hospital Society (DKG), which is available to the editorial network Germany. Differentiated according to professional groups, the vaccination rates in the nursing service of the hospitals are the highest at an average of 95 percent. In intensive care, however, the rate is only 87 percent. The vaccination rate among doctors is exactly on average at 89 percent. According to the survey, exactly two thirds of the hospitals expect restrictions in patient care if unvaccinated staff are no longer allowed to work from March 16th. DKG boss Gerald Gaß said the numbers show a “gratifyingly high” vaccination rate in the clinics. “At the same time, however, it is also clear that the institution-related obligation to vaccinate can still cause problems for patient care.”

Bovenschulte also wants to talk about short-time work benefits

According to Bremen’s Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD), the federal and state governments must also discuss a possible adjustment of the short-time work regulations during their meeting today. Many industries suffered from a large loss of skilled workers – and that will endanger the restart after the corona pandemic has been overcome. “That’s why we have to see, for example, whether the regulations or administrative practice for short-time work benefits need to be adjusted again,” said the SPD politician to the German Press Agency. In particular, it is about the practical design and execution of the application, the extension of the maximum period of entitlement to short-time work benefits and, in the medium term, the introduction of minimum short-time work benefits.

OVG President: Weigh the obligation to vaccinate carefully

According to Thomas Smollich, President of the Higher Administrative Court (OVG) in Lüneburg, a possible compulsory vaccination against Corona must be prepared very carefully. “The prediction that she will be subjected to a judicial review is not difficult to make,” he told the German Press Agency. “The obligation to vaccinate is a serious encroachment on physical integrity. You have to carefully consider whether this can be a way to limit the pandemic.” It is important to assess whether it is proportionate and how it can be implemented. The judge emphasized that it takes time to make vaccination compulsory in accordance with the law and the constitution. As with the compulsory vaccination against measles, the Federal Constitutional Court would be responsible.

Corona summit: what the federal and state governments want to decide

Citizens will probably not be faced with any further tightening of corona measures for the time being. Before the second crisis meeting of the federal and state governments on the rampant Omicron variant this year, there are no signs of easing either. In a draft resolution for the consultations in the afternoon, it is said that there is agreement that “the rules that have been in force so far continue to apply”. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: “We don’t need a course correction.” Apparently, German professional sport will have to be patient and live with the current spectator restrictions for the time being. The draft generally speaks of “opening perspectives” for the moment “at which an overload of the health system can be ruled out”. The other topics of the Corona Summit at a glance:

  • Prioritization in PCR tests
  • general and facility-related vaccination requirements
  • Rules for isolation and quarantine of workers in hospitals and care facilities

Before the federal-state summit in the afternoon, the heads of the federal states will first discuss internally from 11.30 a.m. According to the draft resolution, the next summit meeting of the federal and state governments is already planned for February 14th.
