MV: Corona leads to a record number of citizen complaints
The partly controversial corona protective measures in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have given the state ombudsman Matthias Crone a record of entries. He received more than 2,000 inquiries and complaints in the year ending, around 13 percent more than in the previous year. Almost 400 of the petitions were related to the corona restrictions. In the spring, it was about the ban on foreigners to use their own second home or gardens in the country. Some would have wanted to take care of visits or urgent treatments. “Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania went its own way with its special restrictions, which was not always understandable for those affected. In some cases, legal adjustments were made and the state government also moved in some points,” said Crone. As an example, he cited the visiting rules for residents of old people’s homes that apply today. The complete isolation in the spring caused severe emotional distress for many old people.

Bovenschulte: Corona has exacerbated social inequality
Bremen’s Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) believes that after the end of the corona pandemic, a debate about fair burden sharing is necessary. The topic will certainly also play a role in the election campaign for the federal election in autumn, said Bovenschulte. “I hope that in the summer – through the combination of the season, vaccinations, improved contact follow-up and protective mechanisms – the pandemic issue has at least been relativized to the extent that it no longer determines our everyday life.” Then you have to talk about the economic and social consequences and how the burdens are distributed fairly. The corona crisis has exacerbated social inequality in Germany. “There are corporate sectors that have come through the crisis brilliantly, and there are others that have been hard hit.” This raises the question of whether it makes sense to treat all industries equally.

GEW demands perspective and alternating instruction
The Education and Science Union (GEW) insists on an early decision on how to proceed in schools from January 10th. She urged that as the pandemic progresses, more emphasis was placed on alternating teaching. It is foreseeable that the lockdown measures will have to be extended beyond the holidays, GEW boss Marlis Tepe told the editorial network Germany. Therefore teachers, students and parents need early information about what is coming. Tepe emphasized: “The social imperative to avoid contacts as much as possible must also be implemented in schools.”

The first vaccine arrives in the federal states
One day before the start of the corona vaccination in Germany, the vaccine arrives in the individual federal states today. The federal government has tens of thousands of Biontech cans delivered to a total of 27 locations. From there they will be distributed to vaccination centers and mobile teams, which will then administer the first vaccinations on Sunday. First, people over 80 as well as nurses and hospital staff at particular risk are to be immunized. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) will inform about the vaccination campaign at 11 a.m. at a press conference in Berlin. He has already prepared the population for possible teething problems: “It will jerk at the beginning.” According to a YouGov survey, around two thirds of Germans want to be vaccinated.
