Intensive care physician Marx: situation in hospitals “very tense”

The intensive care doctor Gernot Marx sees a “very tense” situation in the intensive care units of German hospitals in view of the corona situation. The utilization is unusually high for the summer, said the President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine today in ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin”. In view of the increasing number of corona patients to be cared for, 55 percent of the intensive care units are currently reporting partially restricted operations, which coincide with a high failure rate among staff and the reduction of intensive care beds. “Unfortunately, we have to postpone some operations that are not absolutely necessary,” said Marx. The intensive care physician appealed to the population to help ensure that the corona situation remained manageable in autumn. “The mask also belongs to the hat and scarf,” said Marx. In addition, people should not only be vaccinated against corona, but also against flu. A coincidence of a flu wave with a corona wave would put a heavy strain on intensive care medicine.

Uncertainty about Covid vaccinations: booster rate is weakening

Only 70 percent of adults have been vaccinated against Corona three times – despite the increasing number of infections. One reason could be insecurity. Because there are always figures circulating about side effects of vaccinations, which are said to be much higher than officially reported. Mere reports of suspected cases are often equated with actual side effects, and subjective connections to the vaccination are made prematurely, explains Korinna Hennig from the NDR science editorial team. It is “extremely difficult to filter out when there is a connection to vaccination”.

Association calls for family summits in the Chancellery

In preparation for an impending corona wave in autumn, the Evangelical Working Group on Families (eaf) is calling for a family summit in the Chancellery. “We have the impression that there are still no or only insufficient concepts and possibilities in schools and daycare centers that limit infections and at the same time enable social and school learning to the extent that children and young people need for their development,” it says in a letter from the association to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), which is available to the Evangelical Press Service (epd). It states that the avoidance of school and daycare closures does not currently lead to reliable childcare offers. The eaf criticizes that during the currently rampant “summer wave” no or no qualitatively satisfactory care offer can be made in many facilities due to the high sickness rate. The concerns of children, young people and families should not be neglected again, but should be made a “top priority”.

1,975 reported new infections in Hamburg

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the current seven-day incidence of new infections in Hamburg is 671. 1,975 new cases have been reported to the RKI. Six people died with an infection.

RKI only reports current figures for Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt

As usual, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) published only incomplete corona data on Monday morning in the past few weeks and months: The 3,495 laboratory-confirmed new infections, which are reported this morning are spread over just two federal states: Hamburg (1,975) and Saxony-Anhalt (1,519). The other 14 federal states did not report any numbers at the weekend, and as usual late reports can be expected in the coming days. The nationwide seven-day incidence on this basis is 661.4.

Note on the current figures from the countries: The incidence values do not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests are included in the official statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

Lower Saxony: Almost 135,000 calls to the Corona hotline since the beginning of the year

In the first six months of the year, the state of Lower Saxony’s corona hotline received 134,665 calls. This was announced by the Ministry of Health in Hanover. The number of calls fluctuates depending on the current corona situation. In June, 3,141 calls were received, compared to 67,508 in January. About a third of all questions revolved around the current quarantine regulations. Almost a quarter of the callers had questions about testing. Other topics include protective measures, vaccinations and loss of earnings due to illness, according to the ministry.
