Corona news: ‘Opening terraces at Easter is a bridge too far’

This Sunday we will also keep you informed of the most important news facts about the corona virus in Brabant and beyond via this live blog.

09.25 – EU summit moved to online due to increase in corona cases

European heads of government will not meet in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, as previously planned. Instead, they speak to each other online, through a video connection. Due to the rapidly increasing number of corona infections in many EU countries, European Council President Charles Michel has decided to cancel the physical meeting.

07.57 – OMT member De Jong: no room to relax further

Menno de Jong, virologist at the Amsterdam UMC and member of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT), sees no room to further relax the corona measures, now that the number of infections is increasing again. He told AT5 that opening terraces at Easter is a bridge too far and that curfews should also be observed.

03.30 – ‘Great relaxation after Catshuisberaad not likely’

It is unlikely that the government will relax many corona measures next week, say insiders. The ministers involved will discuss this in the Catshuis on Sunday. During the previous press conference, Minister Hugo de Jonge said that at the end of March more could possibly be done again – such as the reopening of the terraces and more space for the retail trade – if the corona figures allow this. But the number of corona infections is increasing considerably.

23.16 – Nearly sixty people arrested at protest Museumplein in Amsterdam
In a prohibited demonstration against the corona measures on the Museumplein in Amsterdam, 58 people were arrested on Saturday. The municipality and the police reported this. On Saturday afternoon about a thousand people gathered on the square to protest. Since the protest was not reported to the municipality, it was banned and the demonstration ended. Water cannons were used for this.
