10.05 HEMA does not refuse customers without a mouth mask
HEMA will not refuse customers who do not wear a mouth mask. According to the retailer, it is not up to retailers to enforce such measures. In line with government policy in the major cities, HEMA will recommend that customers only enter shops with a face mask. In those branches it is mandatory for HEMA staff to wear a mask.

10.02 Theaters Tilburg must intervene
Theaters Tilburg is forced to intervene due to the ongoing corona crisis. The Lucebert restaurant will probably be closed on January 1, 2021. According to director Rob van Steen, this is the only way to prevent further damage to the financial position of the theater. The intended decision affects nineteen employees. It comes on top of the cutbacks not to renew temporary contracts of dozens of on-call employees this autumn.

09.24 Patients less ill
Patients infected with the coronavirus appear to have a less severe course of the disease than patients on the first wave. The Dutch Internists Association (NIV) reports this on the basis of an inventory of 180 patients, spread over nine hospitals.

“Patients admitted to the hospital ward seem to become less ill at the moment, the length of stay has decreased by a third, and the percentage of patients that still need to be transferred to the ICU appears to have been more than halved,” the organization said. The NIV does emphasize that in individual cases the consequences of corona can be undiminished for patients.

08.21 Sufficient measures in the workplace?
Special walking routes, fewer people on the work floor, enough distance between the desks: according to workers, it is by no means always a reality. One in five people in paid employment believes that insufficient measures have been taken at their workplace to keep a distance of five feet. This is evident from a survey of 3,486 people by LocalFocus, conducted in collaboration with Kieskompas.

06.10 – Doubts about corona measures
Doctor-microbiologist Jan Kluytmans of the Amphia Hospital in Breda has his doubts whether the announced corona measures by the cabinet will be sufficient to counter the increasing number of infections.

According to him it is mainly a matter of behavior in the people. “It is important that we take measures now”, says Kluytmans in the talk show Op1. “I have some reservations about whether it will be enough”, said Kluytmans, who advises the cabinet as a member of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT).

06.00 – Corona enforcement is at the expense of other police work
Enforcing the new corona measures will be at the expense of other police work. Jan Struijs, chairman of the Dutch Police Union, warns against this in response to the decision of the cabinet and the Security Council to take stricter corona measures.

03.00 – Infections increase nationwide
About 19,000 corona infections have probably been diagnosed in the past week. The exact figure will be published on Tuesday afternoon in the weekly update of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). In any case, the number will rise sharply, as on Tuesday the institute reported that it had received 13,741 reports of positive tests in the seven days before. The week before, the number of infections rose by 8,265.

00.00 – Number of deaths passes million
The number of people who have died worldwide as a result of the coronavirus has passed the one million mark. This is according to a count from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The virus emerged in China late last year and then spread around the world.

At the end of June, half a million people had died from Covid-19 and by mid-August, three-quarters of a million. The most victims (nearly 205,000) were in the United States, followed by Brazil (almost 142,000), India (over 95,000) and Mexico (over 76,000). In fifth and sixth place are the United Kingdom, with more than 42,000 deaths and Italy (almost 36,000). In the Netherlands, according to figures from the university, 6415 people have died of the virus.
