For the fifth day in a row, more than 20,000 corona infections in the Netherlands have come to light. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) received 21,873 reports of positive tests between Friday morning and Saturday morning. That is the second highest number ever. Only last Thursday there were even more new cases, namely around 23,600.
In the past seven days, RIVM registered 138,762 positive tests. That is the highest weekly total ever. On average, it comes down to 19,823 confirmed infections per day. That average is 48.5 percent higher than a week ago and that is the largest weekly increase in almost a month.
The line of the epidemic has been rising in a straight line since the beginning of October. The seven-day average rose for the 51st day in a row on Saturday. That’s almost a record. In September and October last year, at the start of the second wave, the average rose 57 days in a row.
