So far, there has been no flu wave in the Netherlands this year either. Research by the Amsterdam UMC, the GGD Amsterdam and the RIVM shows that flu is currently hardly circulating.
According to doctor-virologist Menno de Jong, it is possible that after two flu-free years we will have a more severe epidemic, as soon as the corona rules are released.
The explanation for the absence of the flu lies in the lockdown due to the corona pandemic. Because flu is transmitted in the same way as corona, the measures also work against that virus. The chance that all corona rules will already be released this winter and that the flu virus will therefore be able to circulate easily again seems small to De Jong. That means that we will probably hardly experience a flu for the second year in a row.
15.30 – 3505 infections, new Dutch daily record
3,505 new infections have been counted in Brabant since Tuesday. This is reported by the RIVM. Counted across the Netherlands, there is a new daily record: 24,590 positive results. Never before have there been so many positive tests in one day. The old record dates from November 24, when 23,713 infections came to light in one day.
On November 18, RIVM reported 23,587m positive tests. On December 2 and December 5, just over 23,000 new cases were added. The last time there were more than 20,000 positive tests were on December 6.
In the past seven days, RIVM registered 122,347 positive tests. That is the highest weekly total since December 12. On a weekly basis, that number has increased by 41 percent. That is the largest increase since the end of November.
