More than half of the new corona infections in the Lisbon region are currently attributable to the Delta variant. This is according to preliminary data released on Sunday. The Portuguese authorities are doing everything they can to reverse the worrying increase in the number of infections.

National health service Ricardo Jorge reported that 60 percent of new Covid-19 cases around the capital are now caused by the mutation originally discovered in India. This is known as extra contagious. In the northern half of Portugal, the Delta variant is responsible for less than 15 percent of the infections currently registered. There, 80 percent of the new patients contracted the British Alpha variant.

Portugal reported more than a thousand infections for four days in a row, comparable to the end of February when a lockdown was still in place, but just fell below that with 941 on Sunday. Partly due to the vigorous vaccination campaign – 2.5 of the 10 million Portuguese have now been fully vaccinated – the number of hospital admissions and deaths from corona is currently limited.
