Corona: more infections in children under 15 – news

Important to know: The numbers are even higher for the age groups up to 15 to 44 years. But the increase is noticeable among the younger ones, precisely because the numbers used to be so low.

Why are the numbers increasing?

Two reasons are given for this: firstly, the virus mutant B.1.1.7, which spreads faster and is significantly more contagious than the variant we have been dealing with so far. The RKI and the SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach believe that is possible. But that is not one hundred percent certain, says WDR science expert Ruth Schulz: “It could be, for example, that there are more viruses in the child’s throat because of the new variant. But that is not definitively proven.

Second, there is more testing. Because of this, more infections are discovered and reported. So just forego the tests in order to press the numbers, as some are demanding? Little sense, says Ruth Schulz: “The infections remain. With the tests, however, you have the chance to pull out those who may not have any symptoms themselves, but can infect others.”

What about the tests for children?

Small children’s hands often have difficulties with the test sticks, many teachers feel overwhelmed, and there are always parents who do not want their children to be tested. Nevertheless, the state government relies on the voluntary self-tests. The start was before the Easter holidays at the secondary schools, where tests could be carried out twice a week, and the primary schools will probably get it afterwards – if there are enough tests. In a first step, the country procured 3.3 million self-tests, and another 3.1 million are to be delivered after the vacation.

In Solingen, kindergarten children can also test themselves: They are given a kind of lollipop to suck on. This is easier and, above all, safer because it is a more meaningful PCR test. The procedure is still being tested.
