AFrom the ranks of the Union there is a sharp protest against the extension of border controls and closures by Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU). In a joint statement, twelve CDU Bundestag and MEPs call for the rapid reopening of border crossings, as the editorial network Germany (RND) reports in its Thursday editions.

“After more than seven weeks, there must be an end to lattice fences and barriers in the heart of Europe,” it says.

The statement comes from the former parliamentary group leader Volker Kauder, deputy parliamentary group leader Andreas Jung (both CDU) and ten other members of the Bundestag and European Parliament. They demand that the border closures with Switzerland, France and Luxembourg, which are due to the corona pandemic, be lifted immediately. By May 15th at the latest, all border restrictions imposed due to the crisis would have to be removed.

Appeal to von der Leyen

According to the RND, parliamentarians are appealing to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen not to extend the exemption for border controls beyond May 15th. It would be against European law if corona measures were loosened domestically, but continued to be closed to the outside world.

Seehofer only extended the controls at the German borders on Monday to mid-May. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, travelers from Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Denmark, Italy and Spain are still affected by the controls.

The controls were first ordered in mid-March and then extended to slow the spread of the coronavirus in Germany. Since then, people who are neither Germans nor permanently resident here can only come to Germany for a “valid reason for travel”. EU citizens who travel through Germany to their home country or truck drivers are allowed to enter the country. Entry is also restricted to certain border crossings. Since April 10, almost all returnees in Germany have had to quarantine at home for two weeks after spending several days abroad.
