Corona lockdown “on the final straight”? Expert assumes vaccination milestone at the end of May

Karl Lauterbach shares a post on Twitter, giving hope for relaxation and a relaxed summer. Because at the end of May Germany could reach a milestone:

The vaccination campaign started in Germany at the end of December. As the Robert Koch Institute reports, since then over 22 million people have received at least one vaccination and over 6 million have already received both corona syringes. These people are considered fully vaccinated. The “finished” vaccinated currently make up 7.7 percent of the population. A total of 26.9 percent received at least one vaccination.

Some experts assume that at a vaccination value of 50 percent there will be the first easing of the corona crisis. For example, it is conceivable that vaccinated people do not always have to wear a mask *. An end to the pandemic will probably only be achieved with herd immunity – i.e. 70 percent. But now SPD health experts are hoping for earlier easing. HEIDELBERG24 * reports on this.

Corona: Incidence drops extremely when half of the population has received a first vaccination

Late on Saturday evening (May 1), Karl Lauterbauch shared a Twitter post by the American scientist Eric Topol. In the tweed you can see a graph in which the countries Israel, Great Britain and the USA are compared. Topol shows what percentage of the respective population has received a corona primary vaccination and how high the corresponding 7-day incidences as well as deaths and hospital stays are.

It is noticeable that in Israel and Great Britain half the population has already received a corona first vaccination – in Israel even 54.8 percent have received both vaccinations. The exciting thing about it: The incidences in the countries are 0.9 and 3.4! In the United States, where 43.6 percent of people have received an injection, the incidence is still 15.4. For comparison: Germany currently has a 7-day incidence per 100,000 population of 146.5!

Topol writes on Twitter: “What can we expect from vaccinating 10 to 15 percent more of the US population? The 7-day averages for the UK and Israel show a 5-15 fold difference in results. ”

Corona pandemic “on the last straight”? The expert assumes an incidence miracle at the end of May

Karl Lauterbach also assumes that Germany will have a low incidence if half of the population has received a vaccination. This will be the case in just a few weeks. “These figures show how strong the vaccination effect will be when 50% of the population has received a first dose. At the end of May this will mean for us that the number of cases will fall well below 50, ”said the health expert.

Just a few days ago, researchers on behalf of the Public Health England (PHE) showed that a single coronavirus * vaccination protects against infection. The first vaccination reduces the risk of infection by 38 to 49 percent. For the research, 57,000 contacts from 24,000 households in England were examined. All had a three week old first vaccination. For comparison, one million contacts from unvaccinated infected people were included for the evaluation.

With his post on Twitter, the SPD health expert makes hope for easing and relief in Germany. “We are now on the final straight on the last lap. The summer will be good ”, concludes Karl Lauterbach. (jol) * HEIDELBERG24 is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
