SCHIEDAM – Corona seemed to be out of the world for a few months, but a virus does not just end there, and anyone who has recently been to a city like Shanghai realizes all too well that Corona is not ‘gone’ yet.
The virus has also been mentioned in the Netherlands in recent days, and how it still infects people on a daily basis. Now that even Diederik Gommers appears to be infected, it seems that the whole of the Netherlands has contracted the virus, and anyone who says that she or he has not yet contracted the virus will receive surprised reactions to say the least.
The central government’s Corona dashboard keeps the number of infections in the Netherlands at five per hundred thousand people per day. For what it’s worth, because since April 11, the obligation to be tested if you had a serious suspicion of being infected or after a positive self-test, and many people no longer bother to check whether they have Corona as they are snotty or have other minor complaints.
Yesterday, 2,440 positive tests were reported in the country. A fraction of the more than 100,000 daily infections that were diagnosed around February 1. But it is the highest number in about seven weeks; on April 22, 2,589 new cases were registered. On May 23, the lowest number of Corona infections this year was established by the RIVM: 732 in the whole of the Netherlands. Last Monday (the day of the week when the number of infections in the systems is always the lowest) there were 973. Since then, the number has risen to 1419, to 1860 and therefore 2440.
The number of infections is also rising again in Belgium and Germany.
In Schiedam this does not seem to be the case yet. Two new infections were reported yesterday. That is less than the weekly average of 4.1. In recent weeks, between two and nine infections have been reported daily. On May 14, that number last exceeded ten, on May 3 the lowest number this year was registered: one. The pinnacle of the graph was the number of 678 positive tests in Schiedam that emerged on 6 February.
According to the statistics, a Schiedammer last died with the Coronavirus on 11 May. An infected fellow citizen was last hospitalized on 15 May. In the Netherlands, the number of hospital admissions of people with Corona has been between twenty and thirty per day since the beginning of this month.
Minister Ernst Kuipers spoke this morning of a revival in the number of Corona infections. That, and “any increase in the number of people getting sick to the point of requiring hospital care,” is “not alarming,” he said.
