Corona infections in New York have risen sharply, ‘tight, national approach is missing’

In America, the attitude towards the coronavirus now seems to have really turned. After a slow start, more and more measures are being taken. President Trump and his team are now assuming a pitch black scenario for the coming period. “It’s going to be two or three very difficult weeks,” Trump said in a news conference last night. “It’s going to be one of the hardest times we’ve ever had in this country. We’re going to lose thousands of people.”

New York state has been hardest hit by the corona outbreak. Today, the number of deaths rose again by 391 to almost 2000. The number of confirmed infections also increased sharply: from 75,795 to 83,712.

Across the country, about 200,000 people have been infected and about 4,400 people have died from the effects of the corona virus.

The US expects that between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans will die from the virus. “That number of 100,000 deaths is still the best case scenario, if all Americans properly adhere to all guidelines for keeping distance and working from home,” says correspondent Arjen van der Horst.

Earlier, the president expressed the hope that parts of America would be ‘open’ again after Easter, but that is not happening now. “It is the projections of his experts that have changed his mind,” says Van der Horst. Polls also seem to have played a role. “According to several polls, the American people want the government to take more action.”

Hospitals in New York are under enormous pressure, which is why this emergency hospital is being built in Central Park:
