Summer, sun, sea, corona. The Covid variant KP.3.1.1 is wreaking havoc in one of the most popular holiday destinations.
The sub-variant is also spreading rapidly here. It has recently been increasingly measured in Berlin’s wastewater. Since mid-June, the virus load here has increased by 40 percent.
But in Italy the situation is different: the Corona numbers rise. Almost 2,000 infected people are currently being treated in hospital. In the last week of July alone, 17,006 new corona cases were reported, according to the national health ministry.
► This is an increase of around 24 percent compared to the previous week with 13,672 new infections, writes the daily newspaper “La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno”.

The JN.1 derivative has two special mutations that enhance its immune evasion properties. This means that the variant can more easily evade the immune system, penetrate cells more quickly and multiply faster.
This means that KP.3.1.1 currently seems to be particularly active around Naples very successful, because with 3071 new infections the highest incidence is in the Campania region. Behind them the regions of Lombardy and Lazio (including Rom) with 2957 and 2450 new cases.
► The increase is also reflected in Italian hospitals. According to monitoring, 1,829 beds were occupied by Covid-19 infected patients on July 31. Another 55 patients were being treated in intensive care units.
