Most epidemiological indicators for Covid-19 are red. The new infections, the number of hospital admissions and the number of deaths continue to rise, only the number of patients in intensive care units continues to decrease. This is apparent from preliminary figures from health institute Sciensano.

Between 8 and 14 March, an average of 8,614 new infections established. That is 24 percent more than in the previous seven days. The increase is starting to spread from the 20-39 year old group to older age groups. That means even more hospitalizations could be on the way, a new analysis from the Risk Assessment Group.
The virus mainly circulates more in Flanders, but “for the most recent figures, there is also an increase in the number of infections in Brussels and Wallonia”, the RAG indicates. And she points out that the increases in infections are no longer just affecting the younger age groups. “Over the past week, the incidence has now also increased for people aged 40 to 64, and the positivity ratio also showed the strongest increase in this age group,” it sounds. “It can be expected that this increase will also lead to more hospitalizations compared to a circulation in young people.”
The BA.2 subversion of the omikron variant accounted for more than two thirds of the infections investigated further in the past two weeks (and even 85 percent in recent days), the other infections were almost always other omikron versions.
Approximately 35,200 tests were taken in the same period (+7 percent), the positivity rate was 26 percent (+3.6 percent). The reproduction number is 1.09 (+7 percent). A number above 1 means that the epidemic is gaining momentum. The incidence, or number of new cases per 100,000 population, stands at 945 for the last 14 days.
The number of hospital admissions rose between 11 March and 17 March to an average of 163.3 per day (+14 percent). There are now 2,262 people with a corona infection in hospital (+15 percent), of whom 173 patients require intensive care (-6 percent).
In the period from 8 to 14 March dead An average of 21 people per day are affected by Covid-19, an increase of 26 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.
In the meantime, more than 25 million doses of coronavaccins pricked. More than 7 million people received the basic vaccination and a booster shot. That is more than 61 percent of the total population. In Flanders this is 70 percent.
