Corona in the USA – – People are dying like never before

More than 50 million people have been registered as infected and more than 800,000 have died in the United States since the start of the pandemic. The peak of infection was reached in January, when more than 250,000 people became infected in one day. Since then, the corona infection has gone in waves.

Now, however, it is reported that the situation in some places is worse than ever. In Michigan, it has according to CNN been more admissions last week than ever before in the pandemic.

– We have more patients than we have ever had, and we see people die at a pace we have never seen before. The coming weeks look tough. If this continues now as we go on vacation, we expect to have 200 covid patients daily by the end of the month, says Jim Dover, CEO of the health organization Sparrow Health System in Michigan.

Young people are admitted

He tells CNN that since January they have had nearly 300 deaths, of which a quarter of those who have lost their lives were vaccinated. Young people are also among those who are now admitted.

– We see many younger people, and we are still talking about the top not being reached, says nurse Katie Sefton, who describes the situation as challenging.

It is also not just in Michigan that the situation is getting worse. CNN writes that compared to a month ago, admissions to the United States have increased by 40 percent, according to figures from the US Department of Health.

The effect decreases

In recent weeks, too, things have escalated in New Mexico. Health personnel from the Armed Forces have now been brought in to assist. The state is currently experiencing some of the highest infection rates in the country. The capacity of the hospitals is at a breaking point.

– Few vaccinated people get sick. We see the part of the population that is unvaccinated and who is now experiencing a very aggressive form of corona, says Lieutenant Charles Volk to Reuters.

New Mexico was one of the leaders in vaccination earlier this year. Now, however, the vaccine effect decreases, and with it the infection increases again.

Requires vaccine from employees

Now Christmas awaits with family gatherings and extensive spread of the delta variant as a starting point. At the same time, only just under 65 per cent have been fully vaccinated by the Americans in the group to be vaccinated. The situation has caused New York, among other things, to take action.

All private sector employers in the state must now demand that employees be vaccinated by December 27, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday.

The announcement from de Blasio comes in the middle of the rising infection trend, at the same time as the new omicron variant is beginning to gain a foothold both in New York and elsewhere in the country.

The new rules mean, among other things, that all employees in the private sector who show up at the workplace must be able to prove that they have received at least one dose of corona vaccine. They will not be able to circumvent the requirement by being tested regularly instead.

Around 184,000 companies, ranging from large conglomerates to family-owned small businesses, are affected by the new rules. The private sector in New York has a workforce of 3.7 million people.

No other state in the United States has introduced a similar vaccine regulation to the private sector, according to the National Academy of State Health Policy.
