Corona in the BBL: Were the tests correct?

How will things continue in the basketball Bundesliga after the Corona cases – and what will happen next at the BG Göttingen? After the close 72:75 defeat of Violets on Wednesday evening at Medi Bayreuth, there was at least two good news in the morning: Playmaker Stephen Brown, who tested positive for Corona on Tuesday and missed the game in Bayreuth, still has no symptoms, and so far, according to the BG managing director Frank Meinertshagen, the tests of all other actors have turned out negative.

Brown at least suspects that he may not be infected with Corona at all. An indication of this is not only that the American has so far been completely symptom-free, but that, according to Meinertshagen, another PCR test on Wednesday turned out negative. In addition, the positive test on Tuesday showed a very high Ct value, which is an indication of a very low viral load.

The Ct value (cycle threshold value) indicates the number of measurement cycles that were carried out within a PCR sample in order to be able to detect the coronavirus. A high Ct value suggests a lower viral load, since significantly more measurement cycles had to be carried out to detect the virus.

As Meinertshagen reports, there are now different interpretations of the findings: While the health department firmly assumes an incipient infection, other experts have not ruled out that the test was wrong. That in turn is excluded by the health department. The fact is that Brown is in isolation with no symptoms. The Veilchen boss did not want to assess on Thursday whether there is a chance that the BG point guard will appear in the away game in Giessen on Saturday (Tipoff: 6 p.m.): “You have to wait and see how it develops,” he said. “The most important thing is that he is fine.”

On Wednesday it was also feared that the corona outbreak at s.Oliver Würzburg could also be fatal for the BG Göttingen: After the game against Bayreuth, 13 positive test results were made public at s.Oliver, although all players were tested negative on the match day was. It was therefore discussed whether the previous method has weaknesses with regard to the Omikron variant.

“That was the fear of many, but we have to assume that you can still rely on the PCR tests,” said Meinertshagen on Thursday. But why then the obvious test failure before the game Würzburg against Bayreuth? There are indications, the BG managing director reported, that the tests were not carried out properly and that swabs were only taken in the anterior nasal area.

Perhaps the game between Alba Berlin and s.Oliver Würzburg on New Year’s Eve was the trigger, in any case, given the 13 Würzburg corona cases, the Omikron variant seems to have reached the BBL. The league wants to deal with the topic at its meeting on Friday and make decisions. “The question will be to what extent we have to adapt the current regulation to increasing numbers,” explained Meinertshagen.

The quarantine question also arises, because at the moment teams and contact persons who have been identified with Omikron still have to be isolated for 14 days – on this basis, gaming would be as good as impossible. Oldenburg, Würzburg and probably also Alba Berlin are already canceled. As Meinertshagen reported, one idea is that, following the English model at Omikron, and analogous to the Delta variant, completely vaccinated or boosted contact persons can be spared quarantine. The prerequisite for this is that the authorities give the green light.
