Corona in Singapore: – Sets alarm after death record

Singapore had great success with its strategy to crack down on the corona virus.

“Lockdown” early in the pandemic ensured that the virus was virtually eliminated, the country opened up with low death rates, and infection rates were stably low.

With 84 percent of the population vaccinated, the authorities in June chose to change strategy. From having to kill the virus in the event of an outbreak, to having to live with covid-19.

Infection blast

At the turn of the month August / September came the explosion of infection when the Delta variant spread.

From having around 50 new infected people every day, the number has risen to 3,439 for the country with 5.6 million inhabitants.

Wednesday was a record day for the number of dead, with 18 people dying due to corona. In comparison, there were 40 corona-related deaths throughout September. In total, the country has 280 deaths linked to covid-19.

Changed strategy

At the end of September, the authorities took action and imposed strict restrictions to limit the spread of the virus. No more than two people are allowed to meet at social events, and everyone is asked to work from home.

The measures were to last until October 24, but the ever-increasing infection is forcing the authorities to continue the restrictions until November 21. It was announced this week.

– Due to the increasing pressure on the health system, we unfortunately need more time to stabilize the situation. The authorities are doing everything in their power to strengthen support for the hospitals, it was stated in a press release from the authorities.

Warning

According to News.com Lawrence Wood, who heads the group for corona management in the country, has said that two thirds of the intensive care units are occupied.

– We are trying to increase capacity. It’s not just about extra beds and equipment. Our health personnel are overworked and exhausted. It will take time to get in place, and in the meantime there is a risk that the health system will be overloaded, Wood said according to the website.
