In Schleswig-Holstein, the health authorities reported 201 new corona infections to the state on Tuesday (May 18). 51 patients with Covid-19 infection are currently in an intensive care unit.
The current seven-day incidence has continued to decrease in Schleswig-Holstein. According to data from the Kiel Ministry of Health, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week was still below the threshold of 35 – at 32.4 (previous day: 33.3). The number of people in Schleswig-Holstein who have demonstrably been infected with the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic increased by 201 to 61,945. According to an estimate by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), around 57,600 people from Schleswig-Holstein have recovered. According to the current State registration office statistics there have been 1,570 deaths so far in connection with the viral disease Covid-19 – that is four more than the previous day.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) usually updates its data in the morning, but sometimes not until the afternoon. Due to the delay in reporting, the RKI values usually do not correspond to the infection rate, but are too low. As a second number, we therefore give an estimate of how high the seven-day incidence could be without delay in reporting. This value comes closer to the actual development of the pandemic. All regions except Kiel below the 50 limit
The state capital Kiel has the highest incidence in Schleswig-Holstein. It has fallen compared to the previous day (62.4), but is currently still above the 50 limit at 57.9. Lübeck is in second place with 42.5 (previous day: 38.3), the Duchy of Lauenburg district has the third highest value with 42.4 (previous day: 47.0). The independent city of Flensburg has the lowest incidence with 12.2 (previous day: 14.4).

A decision is made on Wednesdays
The state government always decides on Wednesdays on the basis of the incidence values of the districts and independent cities which rules apply in which region. This affects the retail trade, daycare centers and schools. Further easing steps for gastronomy, tourism, sport and culture have been in effect since Monday.
Vaccinations against the coronavirus
People in Schleswig-Holstein have been vaccinated against the coronavirus since December 27, 2020. The vaccination quota shows what percentage of northern Germans have already received the first dose of vaccination.
163 corona patients in clinics
163 people who have tested positive for Corona are currently being treated in the country’s hospitals. That is one less than the day before. 51 of the Covid-19 patients are in intensive therapy (+4), 37 patients have to be ventilated (+ -0).

What these numbers say – and what not
The state government’s statistics show how many confirmed corona infections are known to the authorities in the country and were reported in the intended way. What the statistics cannot clearly show, let alone the current day, is the speed at which the virus is spreading. Because the number of people who have newly tested positive usually also includes post-reported cases from several days. There are delays in the reporting chain, especially around weekends and public holidays.
