In May 2020, a corona outbreak in a restaurant in the Leer district, as a result of which two people died, caused a stir. The judiciary continues to investigate because of negligent homicide.
Meanwhile, the witness interviews have been completed, said a spokesman for the Aurich public prosecutor. However, since there have been many surveys, the evaluation takes longer. The suspicion is directed against unknown, there is no specific accused, the spokesman emphasized. A culpable behavior could exist, for example, if a person went to the celebration even though they had previously had suspicious symptoms. How the proceedings will end cannot be foreseen at the moment, the spokesman said.
More than 30 guests infected
At the celebration of the opening of a restaurant on May 15, 2020 in Moormerland, more than 30 out of 50 guests were infected with the corona virus – two of them died later. Around 200 people had to be in quarantine at the time, including employees of the Meyer Werft in Papenburg. The restaurant operator emphasized several times that he had always followed all hygiene guidelines with regard to the corona virus.
