The mask requirement remains in Lower Saxony for the time being – among other things because of the Delta variant. The country is also relying on more vaccination information.
The vaccination rate in Lower Saxony is still high, even if there are free appointments in many vaccination centers, the Ministry of Health said on Friday. “As before, more than 30,000 vaccinations are carried out every day in the vaccination centers alone, also because it is the turn of many people on the waiting list these days,” said Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD). Rewards, lotteries or gifts such as those in the USA are not yet being planned.

Infectiologist: masks effective and reasonable
Although the incidence values are currently quite low, the country does not want to abandon the mask requirement yet. It is said that it will first have to be seen how the delta variant will develop. Matthias Stoll, infectiologist at the Hannover Medical School (MHH), also considers wearing masks to be an effective and reasonable protective measure.
Cross vaccination: AstraZeneca remains lying
In Lower Saxony, too, the recommendation of the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) on cross-vaccination is to be implemented in the future. Minister Behrens also called for appointments for a second vaccination with AstraZeneca not to expire if no mRNA vaccine can be offered at short notice. However, the recommendation by Stiko now ensures that AstraZeneca vaccine doses remain. Several vaccination centers therefore offer vaccinations without an appointment. The vaccination center in Uelzen had also offered spontaneous vaccinations. But they ended again. Some people had wanted to have their second vaccination preferred – and were abusive when they were denied this, it said.
Test on return journey by plane
Particular attention is currently also paid to the holiday season and returning travelers. The delta variant is also of concern in this context. That is why the State Chancellery recently published declarations for entry into Lower Saxony. Air travelers must always present a negative rapid or PCR test, regardless of whether they are coming from a risk area or not.

Everyone who wants to be vaccinated should get an appointment in July
All interested parties should get an appointment this month. “We can promise that anyone who wants an appointment in July can also have one,” said Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) at the press conference of the Corona crisis team at the end of June. The boost in the vaccination campaign should be made possible by the announced vaccine deliveries: The state government expects 1.3 million doses from all manufacturers approved in Germany for the centers this month alone – including the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, which is only to be vaccinated once.
Birthday, wedding and school enrollment celebrations possible again
Because of the low incidences, the corona rules have now been relaxed almost everywhere. In all rural districts and urban districts with a constant incidence below 35, ten people from up to ten households are allowed to meet according to the currently applicable ordinance. In addition, fully vaccinated, convalescent and children under 14 years of age can take part in a meeting without being counted. If the incidence is below 10, the number may be increased from 10 to 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors. Meetings beyond this are allowed if all adults have a negative test result. For example, birthday, wedding and school enrollment celebrations are now possible again.
Relaxation in leisure activities
Other areas that benefit from the easing of incidences below 10 are, for example, city tours and guided tours through nature and landscapes, here neither a distance requirement nor a mask requirement apply. In the case of tourist overnight stays, a negative corona test only needs to be proven on arrival. Club and discotheque guests must provide evidence of a negative test or proof of full vaccination or recovery. Here, too, there is no mask requirement and distance requirement. In the future, it will be possible to shop at weekly markets without a mask.
It is no longer necessary to wear a mask in schoolyards
In addition: Relief for all students in Lower Saxony, because the mask requirement in the playgrounds has been eliminated. In school buildings, however, the mask requirement remains in the hallways, stairwells and toilets. The step is possible because measures such as the mandatory regular corona self-tests continue to apply.
Ton: “Nobody has to worry about their child”
Speaking of schools: Lower Saxony’s pupils will start the new school year with face-to-face lessons and protective measures after the summer vacation. The compulsory test will continue until the end of September and the mask requirement will continue to apply – if the incidence is over 35 even during class. Schools should also continue to ventilate regularly. “For me it is right at the top of the agenda that the educational and graduation chances of our students are preserved and comparable to previous years. Nobody has to worry about their child,” said Minister of Education Grant Hendrik Tonne (SPD). In addition, the state announced that it would subsidize ventilation systems with 20 million euros. Years 1 to 6 should benefit from this. Because in these grade levels the children will not be vaccinated in the fall. Many school authorities reacted cautiously to this announcement – among other things because of the short-term nature.
Corona hotline in Lower Saxony
Anyone who thinks they have been infected with the coronavirus should contact the on-call medical service on 116 117 or their family doctor. The doctor then clarifies over the phone whether it is a suspected case and takes appropriate measures. If an infection is detected, the patient has to be quarantined at home. Contact persons of the sick person are also usually isolated at home for 14 days if they are in close contact. The most important protective measures remain: keep your distance, wear a face mask, wash your hands regularly and do not cough or sneeze into your hand.
With an incidence of less than 10 in a county, there is relaxation for private meetings and events. more
