The novel Coronavirus is in Italy, apparently, much longer than previously thought!
The causative agent of Sars-CoV-2 had been detected in effluents of the two Northern Italian cities of Milan and Turin in December 2019, it says in a statement from Italy’s national health Institute ISS. In Bologna, the Virus was detected in a sewage sample, which dates from the end of January. The news Agency AFP was on Friday to inspect the corresponding documents.
Officially identified the Coronavirus outbreak in Italy was only in mid-February.
For the ISS study, the 40 waste water samples were investigated, which were taken between February 2019 and February 2020. The results were confirmed by two different laboratories using different methods.
Italy is now almost 240 000 proven Corona infections and nearly 35 000 cases of death is one of the most affected countries in Europe. Starting in March where whole regions were cordoned off.

One of the researchers involved said to the leaf: “The study of 40 waste water samples were collected from October 2019 to February 2020, and 24 control samples tested, which is the date of the collection (September 2018 to June 2019) has allowed the presence of the Virus with certainty.”
And further: “The results were confirmed in two different laboratories using two different methods, showed the presence of SARS-Cov-2 RNA in samples collected in Milan and Turin on 18.12.2019 and in Bologna at the 29.01.2020. In the same cities were found in the months of January and February 2020 positive samples, while the samples from the October and November 2019, as well as all control samples, negative results were obtained.“
