++ Corona in Germany: Markus Söder fears “Corona-RAF”

The RKI reports falling numbers of cases and incidences of new corona infections in Germany. Markus Söder (CSU) warns against further radicalization of the “lateral thinkers”.

Update from Saturday, February 19, 2022, 10:16 a.m.: Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has warned of a consolidating circle of a “Corona-RAF” in the “lateral thinker” scene. The number of demonstrators against the corona measures taken by governments and authorities is decreasing, Söder said in an interview with the Würzburg Mainpost. “Unfortunately, some people got lost in a world of conspiracy theories during the pandemic,” said the CSU boss. “In the end, we must not get a “Corona-RAF” for which violence would be acceptable.”

That is why it is important to take consistent action against anti-democratic tendencies. “Platforms like Telegram create closed bubbles of conspiracy theorists. If increasingly absurd fake news is sold there as truth, there is a risk that individuals will develop a supposed moral right to resist,” said Söder. He therefore advocated switching off the Telegram platform in Germany. “The most effective way in Germany would be to switch off Telegram – it’s called geoblocking – because unfortunately by far the most hate speech is spread via this platform.”

New corona infections in Germany: high number of unreported cases

Experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded in the RKI data. Test capacities and health authorities are therefore at the limit in many places, and contacts are only tracked to a limited extent. In addition, the number of people who no longer have their infection confirmed by a PCR test is likely to increase – the infection is therefore not included in the official statistics.

According to the RKI, the health authorities have registered a total of 13,445,094 cases of infection since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of corona deaths recorded in Germany has now risen to 121,202. The RKI put the number of people who had recovered from corona disease in Germany at around 9.595 million.

In November, the federal and state governments had defined the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive benchmark for tightening or relaxing the corona measures. This value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants are hospitalized within seven days because of a corona infection. According to the latest RKI report, the hospitalization incidence nationwide on Friday was 6.24. A week earlier it had been 6.46. (kke/AFP/dpa)
