Because of the corona pandemic, several regions have already canceled the traditional Easter bonfires for this year. Anyone who does not adhere to it faces a fine.
Easter fires actually belong to Easter like colored eggs and chocolate Easter bunnies. Traditionally, most fires are lit on the Saturday before Easter at dusk. This year, however, nothing will come of it in many places. The reason is – as in the previous year – the corona pandemic.
These municipalities banned Easter bonfires in 2021
The following cities and districts have already banned Easter bonfires this year:
City of Göttingen
City of Osnabrück
City of Wilhelmshaven
District of Emsland
District of Friesland
County of Bentheim

“Avoid social gatherings wherever possible”
The situation does not allow that, said Michael Kiehl, first district councilor in the County of Bentheim. “We have to be patient and continue to avoid social gatherings wherever possible”. Also in Wilhelmshaven is so argued. “In order to effectively prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it is important to keep contacts as low as possible,” said Ralf Janßen, the head of the public order office, explaining the city’s ban that was already imposed at the beginning of March. Heiko Blume, District Administrator in District of Uelzen, indicates the possible consequences. It is foreseeable that the meeting of larger groups of people on the Easter weekend at the beginning of April would be “not responsible” with regard to the infection, the CDU politician said at the beginning of February.

Piles of wood piled up must be disposed of
Anyone who has already started to pile up piles of wood must dispose of them properly. This is what the Grafschafter district authority points out. Anyone who burns them anyway must expect a fine, it was said. The town Göttingen points out that no green cuttings may be placed at the well-known Easter bonfires. Those who illegally dispose of their green waste face a fine of up to 1,000 euros.
