LEEUWARDEN – The number of infections in Friesland has fallen by 25% this week. This is reported by the GGD Fryslân. 3072 Frisians tested positive for COVID-19 this week, compared to 4120 a week earlier. The decline is stronger than in the other provinces. Hospital occupancy also continues to decline.
The good figures are not expected to be an unnecessary luxury. It is good that the burden of care is relieved because the omikron variant of the corona virus is advancing. It is now nationally dominant. The GGD says: “The expectation is that this will also become visible in the Frisian figures in the short term and that the number of hospital admissions will increase afterwards. It is therefore necessary to limit the number of contacts and to protect as many people as possible with (booster) vaccination.”
Booster vaccination helps
Just like a week ago, the number of infected people over the age of 75 has fallen the fastest in relative terms. In the nursing and care homes, 60 residents tested positive, half less than a week earlier. This is probably because many elderly people are better protected thanks to their booster vaccination.
The early closure of schools is also clearly visible in the infection figures. In one week there were half as many positive tests in the age groups 4-12 years and 12-18 years. The twenty-somethings are now the largest age group to test positive.
60.010 boostervaccinaties
This week, up to and including Wednesday, 60,010 extra shots (booster vaccinations) were administered. Meanwhile, 85 percent of the vaccinated Frisians aged 75 and older have received a booster shot. Last week it was 80.5 percent. Around 25,000 people were vaccinated during the first three days at the XXL Booster location in Leeuwarden, which opened on Tuesday.
People born in 1986 or earlier can make an appointment online for a booster vaccination. They must bring their ID with them. In addition, the intention is to complete the health declaration on paper in advance and bring it with you. This prevents delay. GGD Fryslân has sufficient puncture streets available, also on New Year’s Day.
Help GPs
GGD Fryslân has called on the Frisian GPs to help with the large-scale booster campaign. They will test 7300 residents of 170 care institutions without medical service and 625 non-mobile home residents. These operations are nearing completion. In addition, the general practitioners were asked to supervise the vaccination locations of GGD Fryslân. More than 25 general practitioners are already operating shifts there.
The numbers
In the past seven days, 10,006 corona tests were taken on residents of Fryslân, compared to 12,416 last week. The find percentage increased from 26.7 to 27.8. A total of 729,308 tests have now been taken on Frisians. In the past seven days, 60,905 vaccinations have been given to Frisians. The total number of injections now stands at 910,840.
The total number of infections comes to 97,221 with this week’s 3072. Seven deaths have been reported, up from seventeen last week. The number of corona patients in hospitals fell from 68 last Wednesday to 56 people last Monday. Last week there were eighteen people in the ICU, sixteen on Monday.
