The number of corona infections continues to fall in Brabant. Nearly 12,000 new infections have been identified in the past week. That’s less than a week ago. That while since this week the omikron variant has been dominant in the Netherlands. This is reported by the RIVM.
This means that more than half of all established infections are that virus version. The delta variant has been pushed to second place.
The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) expects that the rapid spread of the omikron variant ‘will lead to additional infections in the coming period, as a result of which the number of hospital admissions will also increase again’.
Now another drop
A total of 11,858 new infections were identified in Brabant last week. Last week there were 13,530. So there is no sign of an increase yet. In our province there is a decrease in the number of infections for the third week in a row. But the decline is a lot less rapid: it is a decrease of about twelve percent.
There is also a national decrease in the number of infections. RIVM was notified of 84,398 positive corona tests in the past seven days. That is 11 percent less than the week before. In the weeks before that, the number of new cases fell by 18.6 and 21.3 percent respectively. So the decline is getting a little slower.
Effects of Christmas
The effects of Christmas are not yet reflected in these figures. Any infections that have taken place at the Christmas table will probably only be visible in next week’s measurements. Only then will people who are now infected be tested positive.
The number of corona patients in hospitals in Brabant also continues to fall. This Tuesday, 295 patients with a confirmed corona infection are in hospital. A week ago (after correction) there were still 348. The number of patients has decreased by about 15 percent.

There is also a national decrease in the number of corona patients in hospitals. The corona complaints were so bad in 1172 people that they had to be hospitalized last week. That is the lowest level since early November. Compared to last week, the number of admissions fell by 12 percent.
R-number
The reproduction number, or r-number, is also estimated this week at less than 1. It remains at about 0.9, according to the RIVM. That means that every hundred people, together, infect about ninety others and that the virus is therefore slowly decreasing.
RIVM expects the r-number to be above 1 again next week.
