There is still much doubt about the impact on our health of the omikron variant. It is still unclear whether omikron makes people less sick, just as sick or sicker than its predecessors. According to biostatistician Tom Wenseleers (KU Leuven) however, everything indicates that the omikron variant escapes the previously built up immunity.
This means that people who have built up immunity to other variants – such as the delta variant – through vaccination or a recent corona infection, could easily become infected with the omikron variant. That is exactly why experts emphasize the importance of the booster shot: thanks to that third shot, the immunity to omikron would rise again. The WHO also calls on governments to focus strongly on that booster shot.
