- In Switzerland, for the first time, a person will be financially compensated for injury caused by a corona vaccine.

“So far one application has been approved,” said the EDI spokeswoman. The compensation relates to loss of earnings, which must be proven. The satisfaction is a kind of compensation for pain and suffering. It is not known which of the corona vaccinations was affected in this case.
The Interior Department has so far received 320 applications. Recently, 50 applications were pending, 30 of which are being examined in detail. In order to receive compensation, there must be a causal connection between the health problems and the vaccination.
Complex clarifications
The clarifications are complex. Almost three years passed between the application for compensation and the first payment. Several requests have already been rejected.
According to the Interior Department, the applications alleged a variety of health damages, both trivial and more serious. An inability to work that did not lead to any loss of earnings would not be recognized as damage, it said. The costs of the deductible or the deductible from the health insurance company would also not be taken into account as financial damage.
17 million vaccine doses administered
The largest vaccination campaign in Swiss history started in December 2020: The Federal Council called on as many people as possible to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Around 17 million vaccine doses were administered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The vaccination rate was around 70 percent. In Switzerland, vaccination was free for citizens until the end of June 2024.
According to official information, over 14,000 people in Switzerland died from or with Covid-19. According to experts, the global community got the corona pandemic and ultimately the overload of hospitals under control, primarily thanks to vaccinations.
Fever, dizziness and inflammation
In rare cases, problems or damage occurred after vaccinations. The most common symptoms were fever, headache, fatigue, chills, nausea and dizziness, inflammation of the heart muscle tissue or hives.
The supervisory authority Swissmedic reported almost 17,000 suspected cases of undesirable vaccination symptoms for Corona, almost 39 percent of which it classified as serious. Most suspected cases related to the Moderna vaccination, which was also administered most frequently in Switzerland. The authority always described the benefit-risk ratio of the vaccines used as positive overall.

Since the vaccination was recommended by the state, injured parties are entitled to compensation. However, only under certain conditions. The federal government also only pays on a subsidiary basis, i.e. if the insurers or the vaccination manufacturers do not pay.
“The Confederation could only hold the vaccine manufacturers responsible if the vaccine turned out to be defective,” the EDI told “Sonntagsblick”. “So far, Swissmedic has not registered any quality defects in the Covid vaccines in question.”
