Fulda – Before further tightening of the corona rules in Hesse could come into force, people are apparently increasingly drawn to the local recreation areas. The police in East Hesse, for example, are watching developments in the Rhön and Vogelsberg with concern and have made a clear appeal on Twitter. Because the police fear not only the day visitors from Hesse, but also from the neighboring state of Bavaria.
Before the tightening of the Corona rules: There is also a risk of traffic chaos in the Rhön
First became the Große Feldberg im Taunus overrun by day trippers, now the Rhön in East Hesse threatens a similar fate. In the last official holiday week in Hesse, many people are drawn again – despite the very tense Corona-Situation – in nature and in the local recreation areas. And not just from Hessen. In Bavaria, people are happy about Epiphany, which gives them another day off on January 6th.

“We already have a lot of visitors at the Wasserkuppe and the surrounding excursion destinations,” said a spokesman for the East Hesse police headquarters on Wednesday (January 6th, 2021) when asked. The parking lots “Am Schwedenwall” and the parking lot “Rotes Moor” are already full – both parking spaces can hold around 300 cars. The police are currently with a number of officers in the “double-digit range” in the entire Rhön en route to ensure regular traffic and compliance with the corona rules. You can expect increasing numbers of visitors, especially in Vogelsberg and on the Wasserkuppe.
The following parking spaces at the Wasserkuppe are already occupied:

Traffic chaos in the Rhön threatens: despite Corona, police fear many visitors
Even if the police understand that the snow magically attracts the lockdown-battered, they ask to avoid the excursion destinations in times of Corona. She formulates a clear appeal to those who are already there:
- Visitors should orientate themselves on the traffic announcements
- Only park in the designated areas
- Keep escape routes clear
- Comply with distance and hygiene rules

On the New Year’s weekend, the police in East Hesse had a similar picture to their colleagues in the Taunus. Rhön and Rennsteig had to contend with an influx of visitors. The Corona vacationers caused “considerable disruptions”, as reported by the news portal “infranken.de”. (Rebecca Röhrich)
