Corona entry rules extended: What travelers now need to know

In many countries, the number of corona cases is rising again significantly. The federal government is extending the existing entry rules.

Berlin – The federal government has extended the existing corona rules for travelers until September 10th and has made it easier for people to quarantine. This emerges from a cabinet decision on the entry regulation that Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) presented on Wednesday (July 21, 2021) in Berlin. The current rules for entering Germany under pandemic conditions would only have been valid until July 28th.

Corona entry rules in Germany extended: Vaccinated people can end quarantine early in the future

The change to the quarantine rules that has now been adopted provides that fully vaccinated persons who come from so-called virus variant areas can end their corona quarantine prematurely if it can be proven that their vaccination against the virus variant is effective in the area visited. According to the new regulation, this is the case when the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has determined the effectiveness against the virus variant and announced it on its website.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the RKI will soon publish a list of the effectiveness of the corona vaccines in connection with virus variants on its website. Entrants prove their status by submitting their vaccination certificate to the responsible health department.

So far, there has also been a strict corona quarantine requirement for those who have been fully vaccinated and who come from virus variant areas. According to its own information, the Ministry of Health wants to provide even more information about how exactly the regulations for travelers will be in order to avoid quarantine from July 28th.

New corona entry rule for downgraded virus variant areas

In addition, the cabinet decided on Wednesday another innovation that should take effect if a corona virus variant area is downgraded to a high incidence area while returnees are still in quarantine. Then the rules for high-incidence areas should apply to the end of the quarantine – and consequently a shortening of the 14-day quarantine obligation should be possible. The returnees can “free themselves” after five days. There was recently a downgrade from virus variant area to high incidence area in the case of Portugal.

The new rules come into effect when the old regulation expires on July 28th. The corona situation makes it necessary to extend the existing regulations, said Spahn. “We learned from last summer that we have to be careful.” (Dpa)
