The incidence in Emden rose to 138.2 on Wednesday. On the three days before, the value was 112. The city sees the cause in three larger outbreaks.
The city attributes the infection process mainly to three so-called clusters. Overall, these three outbreak events alone are responsible for more than half of all infections in the current seven-day incidence, according to the city.
Outbreak in care facility
On the one hand, there are several cases of people living in Emden and working for a larger company outside the city who commute to work daily in car pools, according to the city. Since the beginning of May, 27 infections from employees and 15 co-infections from family members and in family surroundings have become known. In addition, several infections were reported from a care facility. In a new series of tests, five more infections from mostly vaccinated residents were added.
Multiple infections on site
There are also several infections related to a local company. Eight people are infected here, especially in the family environment. A second family with several children is also affected. “This third cluster in particular worries us, as significant effects on daycare centers, schools and possibly further infections in the second family are to be expected,” the city said on Wednesday.
OB: Emden has the situation under control
In order to get the number of new infections under control, the CDU is calling for the Bundeswehr to help. Lord Mayor Tim Kruithoff (non-party), on the other hand, says that the situation is under control, that a lot of tests are carried out and that all contacts can be tracked. Nevertheless, it is conceivable that the incidence will remain high. Like in Delmenhorst, where the incidence was very high last autumn and it took weeks before it fell again. “I understand that after almost 1.5 years of pandemic, people’s patience is finite,” said Kruithoff. He assured: Everything will be done to ensure that the situation in Emden will soon relax.
State Health Office praises the city’s actions
According to the Lower Saxony State Health Office (NLGA), there have been regional outbreaks in many places since the beginning of the pandemic. Emden has done well so far. Above all, the small number of inhabitants now plays a role in the high numbers. Individual outbreaks had a stronger impact on the incidence value, said an NLGA spokesman. Overall, the State Health Office praised the city’s approach and communication.
