The US biotech company Gilead has set the treatment costs for its hopeful drug Remdesivir for corona patients. The price of a five-day treatment with the drug is said to be $ 2,340 per patient in the United States and other industrialized countries, the company said. For private patients, it should be $ 3,120.
The price has been the subject of heated debate since the FDA approved its use in emergencies in COVID-19 patients in May. Experts had said that Gilead should not use the pandemic for profit.
Billions in revenue
The price now set is below the $ 5,080 that the US Drug Prices Research Group (ICER) has recommended. However, analysts believe that Gilead could generate billions in revenue from remdesivir over the next few years.
Most recently, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave the green light for the limited use of the drug in Covid 19 patients in the EU. However, the European Commission still has to issue the release. Gilead originally developed the drug for use against Ebola infections.
