Tragedy: Virus numbers are exploding unchecked. On Wednesday, the authorities reported 11,398 new corona infections – there have never been so many.
On Saturday, Austria broke a new negative corona record with almost 10,000 new infections every day, just missing the five-digit infection numbers. The numbers on Sunday and Monday were deceptive with 8,554 and 8,178 positive results, and 7,712 new corona cases were reported on Tuesday. But: Due to problems with data registrations, a lot of late registrations were expected, so the situation is much worse than expected.
The authorities are now reporting on Wednesday 11,398 new corona infections – for the first time a five-digit increase in just one day! – and 23 deaths in the last 24 hours, plus 1,824 corona patients (+75) in the normal wards in the domestic hospitals and a further 413 intensive care patients (+10). For comparison: on Wednesday a week ago there were 6,506 new infections across Austria, as well as 20 deaths, 1,419 corona patients in normal wards and a further 333 in intensive care units.
Federal state numbers and thousands in quarantine
According to the ministries, 83,322 people are currently in quarantine in Austria, 6,283 were added within the last 24 hours. 380,296 were also carried out within one day. There are so many new infections in the federal states:
Burgenland 214
Carinthia 574
Lower Austria 2,176
Oberösterreich 3.424
Salzburg 662
Steiermark 1.222
Tirol 951
Vorarlberg 588
Wien 1.587
That brings the new 2G rule
The new 2G rule, which has been in force since Monday, is intended to slow down the development of infections in Austria again. Vaccinated or recovered – nothing works without this proof in gastronomy, in the cultural sector, at sporting events, in nursing homes and even at the hairdresser’s. Those who have only been tested have to stay outside now. The 3G rule will remain in place at work and in retail as well. New 2G and 3G rules will also apply to the unemployed.
In any case, the burden on hospital staff is increasing immeasurably. Doctors and nurses from several hospitals therefore call for vaccinations and report painful experiences in video messages. They paint a depressing picture of the situation in the intensive care units. Particularly dramatic: Assistant doctor Paul Köglberger (30) from Klinikum Wels (Upper Austria) tells of patient Herbert (38), who was still healthy until recently: “Now his two children no longer have a father and his wonderful wife is a widow because he is dead.”
