In Hesse, over 2,500 retirement home residents have already died of or with Covid-19. Possibly also because there was a lack of hygiene in some places.
Almost every second of the around 800 old people’s and nursing homes in Hesse has already been affected by corona infections. The judiciary is now taking a closer look at at least two cases. The Marburg public prosecutor’s office is investigating a corona outbreak in a home in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district. The Hanau public prosecutor’s office is investigating a home in the Main-Kinzig district.
In both cases, several residents died from or with the virus. The investigators are examining why the pathogen could cause so much damage there. Had the homes done enough for hygiene and infection control? In the Main-Kinzig district, there is initial suspicion of negligent homicide.
The bereaved turn on justice
The Hanau public prosecutor’s office does not reveal which home it is. According to HR information, it is a retirement home in Großkrotzenburg. Seven residents died there in December in connection with the pandemic. The Main-Kinzig district then checked the home and found hygiene deficiencies. A bereaved turned the prosecutor on. The home management rejects the allegations.
The public prosecutor’s office in Marburg does not name the institution in which they are investigating. But there, too, several residents fell victim to the virus. The investigators had become aware of it through press reports. There are still no specific suspects. It is about understanding which circumstances exactly led to the death of the residents. For this purpose, autopsies would also be carried out. The investigations are still ongoing.
