Corona data newsletter | Tuesday, January 5, 2021: The virus variant B.1.1.7 – What is known so far

Good evening, dear newsletter friends,

I have to say: hats off. Thank you for your many letters, opinions and interesting contributions to my question yesterday about how you got on with the Corona issue. And we in the editorial team were also very happy about the praise. We can only give that back – for your careful reading, your questions and also for recommending.

Today I would like to introduce the following topic: What is known about virus variant B.1.1.7 so far. And finally, of course, what the Prime Ministers agreed with the Federal Chancellor: Extension of the shutdown or relaxation.

But first, as always, a look at current developments.

At a glance: the current figures

Most of the new infections were in Bayern (+2.528), North Rhine-Westphalia (+1.969), Baden-Wuerttemberg (+1,510) and Saxony (+1.302).

Where do the different numbers come from?

Please allow me to make a note at this point: Thomas M. from Magdeburg was quite right to ask how it could be that the numbers of new infections just mentioned do not match the following. So specifically: Why the RKI writes of 1,302 reported new infections in Saxony and we below of 2,071.

The question is a good one, because it shows how careful you have to be with numbers and messages. The answer (in a nutshell) is: It depends on the different sources and times when the figures are published.

The difference is that there is a delay in the reports from the doctor who carries out the test to the laboratory, to the health department, to the district administrations, to the ministries of the federal states up to the Robert Koch Institute. Everyone publishes the numbers as they are available to them at a particular point in time. To put it simply: the closer you are to the infection process, the more “current” the numbers are. That means: At the beginning of the number block I mention the RKI numbers as it stood at 8:20 in the morning. And below, the figures are calculated from the information provided by the districts and ministries (as of late afternoon) – so they are a bit more up-to-date.

So these are now the “more current” values from our three federal states.
