Corona crisis: Queen addresses her people in speech

Because of the devastating corona crisis, Queen Elizabeth II addressed her people on Sunday (9:00 p.m. CEST). The only fourth speech of this kind in the 68-year reign of the Queen is broadcast on television. The message of the 93-year-old queen during these times of crisis was recorded in Windsor Castle.

In her speech to the British people and the Commonwealth, the Queen will call for the pandemic to be dealt with with characteristic British self-discipline and quiet determination. “I hope that in the coming years everyone can be proud of how they dealt with this challenge.” This is evident from excerpts of speech published in advance by Buckingham Palace. The speech is a sign that the government is increasingly concerned about the rapidly growing number of deaths from Covid-19 lung disease.

The British Ministry of Health recorded the highest number of deaths in one day to date, with 708 deaths on Saturday. A total of 4,313 people died of lung disease in British hospitals, including a five-year-old child. According to media reports, it is said to be the youngest victim of the corona pandemic in Great Britain.

The queen traditionally gives a Christmas speech, but otherwise she is very reluctant to make such appearances. She has only given exceptional speeches like today three times: 1991 on the Gulf War, 1997 on the death of Princess Diana and 2002 after the death of her mother, “Queen Mum”.
