“We found out nine days after the performances that several people of the group were infected,” said organizer Beat Hegner on Swiss television. The region now has 1,238 infections, compared to 500 in mid-September.
On Wednesday alone, 94 infections were added, twice as many as the day before. The overloaded hospital in the rural canton has asked people to wear mouth masks and avoid meetings.
Half of the people who undergo a test test positive. “Extreme,” said hospital director Franziska Föllmi. “The explosion in the number of cases in Schwyz is one of the worst in all of Europe,” reported the prominent Swiss physician Reto Nüesch.
Authorities in the canton of nearly 160,000 inhabitants have mandated face masks at events of more than 50 people, and where distance cannot be kept. Shopping without a mouth and nose cover is still possible.
Switzerland reported 1346 new infections on Wednesday, a day record.
