Wifo economist Julia Bachtrögler told APA that the two federal states had by far the highest proportion of employed people in sectors that were economically or very severely affected by the current Covid 19 crisis.
Wifo has developed a scale for the economic impact of the individual economic sectors due to the Corona crisis.
Gastronomy particularly badly affected by the Corona crisis
According to the economic researchers, the currently greatest negative economic effects are in accommodation and catering businesses, followed by art and entertainment as well as education and teaching. These areas are most affected by the current corona shutdown. The retail, transport, financial and insurance services and real estate sectors are also significantly affected.
Two thirds of the workforce in affected sectors
According to the Wifo study, two thirds of the Austrian workforce are currently working in sectors that are severely or severely affected. “Despite considerable differences in the regional economic structures, a similar degree of concern can be seen for most of the federal states,” said the co-study author.
The advantages and disadvantages of specializing in different economic sectors would “largely cancel each other out”. The study is an as-is analysis. This does not take into account a loosening of the anti-corona measures from next Tuesday.
