Corona crisis costs 24 billion euros in revenues from services exports | NOW

In the past year, the Netherlands exported 10 percent less in services, such as transport services and other products that are not tangible. That appears on Tuesday Numbers of the Central Bureau of Statistics. Goods exports fell slightly less sharply at 6 percent.

Services trade was hit hardest in the fourth quarter. Then exports fell by 14 percent and imports by 17 percent.

In total, the Netherlands exported 223 billion euros worth of services in 2020, 24 billion euros less than in 2019. This decrease is largely due to the travel restrictions caused by the corona crisis. Foreign tourists and business travelers came to the Netherlands less often and subsequently spent less here. In 2020, tourists spent nearly 9 billion euros less in the Netherlands than in 2019.

The only service that was exported more was intellectual property. Exports of this grew from EUR 62 billion to EUR 65 billion. This increase is mainly due to companies such as streaming services.
