Corona consequences: Corona crisis is destroying a particularly large number of jobs in tourism and marketing in Bavaria

Exclusive

The corona crisis is very noticeable on the labor market. Nevertheless, Bertram Brossardt warns of a shortage of skilled workers in the medium term. Because in some industries there is even a lack of staff.

In Bavaria, the corona crisis can clearly be felt on the labor market, as the Association of Bavarian Economy (vbw) points out. The increase in unemployment hit the tourism, advertising and marketing sectors particularly dramatically. In tourism, the number of unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2020 rose by 54 percent to 14,400.

At the same time, the number of vacancies fell by 50 percent to just 2,700 compared to the same period in the previous year. In the marketing sector, the number of unemployed rose by 55 percent to 5500. Many people also lost their jobs in purchasing and trading professions or in vehicle technology.

vbw labor market barometer: One vacancy for every three unemployed

Nevertheless, the Association of Bavarian Economy sees the shortage of skilled workers as a problem in the medium term: “In the medium term, after the crisis has been overcome, the shortage of skilled workers will again be a critical issue,” says vbw Managing Director Bertram Brossardt.

On the basis of new figures from the Federal Employment Agency, the employers’ association has published the “Labor Market Barometer
Bayern
” created. The evaluation was available to our editorial team in advance.

The number of unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2020 was on average 35.4 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. This goes hand in hand with a decrease in the number of vacancies by a good 20 percent. In purely mathematical terms, there is currently one vacancy for every three unemployed in Bavaria. On average, around 274,500 people in Bavaria were unemployed in the last quarter of 2020, while 95,700 jobs were vacant.

Bertram Brossardt: “Long-term good prospects”

“There are more vacancies than applicants in mechatronics, energy and electrical professions, in medical health professions, and in construction planning and measurement,” reports Brossardt. In civil engineering or in non-medical health professions, the labor market is arithmetically balanced.

“Anyone who is well qualified and strives for jobs with high demand still has the best opportunities in Bavaria,” concludes Brossardt. Our companies offer young people good long-term prospects and an attractive working environment, “he emphasized. We are currently in a profound crisis that Jobs costs, but in the long term we are fighting against the shortage of skilled workers. “
