Corona Cologne: Looking for the positive in the crisis is a mistake

Cologne –

Whether celebrities on talk shows or the neighbor at the weekly market: Time and again, people in Cologne are trying to get something good out of the Corona crisis. But these people did not understand some things, says our author. A comment.

It is in the nature of things that we look back at the end of the year. On what was. And this time there was really only one thing: Corona.

The virus has been determining our everyday lives for nine months now. With such a long time it is also obvious that the positive will be sought in the crisis.

Coronavirus in Cologne: The effects of the pandemic

You have probably heard it lately in your circle of friends and acquaintances: “We have a lot more time together” – “Finally out of the hamster wheel” – “I haven’t been home in one stretch for so long …”

But anyone who wants to have found the “good thing about Corona” is actually still doing really well, looks and thinks too briefly – and does not know the suffering of others.

Corona in Cologne: 13 dead at Christmas

At Christmas alone, 13 Cologne residents died as a result of the virus. Of course, it mostly affects old people. But their relatives, who are now organizing a funeral, would certainly have loved to spend one or the other New Year’s Eve with mother, father, grandma or grandpa.

Anyone who emphasizes the “good thing about Corona” cannot have existential needs. How many Cologne restaurateurs do not know whether they can open again after the crisis or whether this means the way to Hartz IV for them? Explain to them the “good thing about Corona” …

Entire branches of the economy are on the ground. The consequences of the pandemic will be felt by every taxpayer, given the billions in aid from the state.

Thinking positively, looking ahead, is right and necessary in times of crisis. But anyone who is philosophizing out loud about the chances for our togetherness through the crisis at this point in time is not affected. And anyone who says in all seriousness that they finally have more time for themselves and others thanks to the lockdown, previously only had one luxury problem.

Everything is a matter of priority: you can take your time. That always worked at Christmas – even before Corona.
