Corona cases in France jumped 150 percent in the last week

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Minister of Health French Olivier Veran says infection covid-19 has just risen sharply to an unprecedented level. This they stated after in the last 24 hours, 18 thousand new cases occurred in France.

He said the sharp spike in corona cases was due to the delta variant. He said that when referring to the latest cases, the corona virus in France increased by 150 percent in the past week.

France’s highest infection rate is the highest since mid-May or when the country was planning to implement lockdown third national.

“This we have never seen. Also with the (original form of) covid, whether it is the British variant, or South Africa or Brazil,” he said as quoted by AFP, Tuesday (20/7).

France, which is bracing for a fourth wave of infections due to the spread of the Delta variant, has sought to vaccinate as many of its citizens as possible.

This effort is currently facing challenges. One is from parliament, which is still debating a controversial new set of rules aimed at pressuring millions of vaccine refusals to get injections. This is because only 45 percent of the population is fully vaccinated.

In order to address the debate, Veran said the recent cases showed that now was not the time to raise doubts.

What is important, he said, is achieving herd immunity through high-level vaccine coverage so that Covid can be defeated.
