The number of infections and deaths from the corona virus in China is on the rise: calls for measures are therefore launched in Germany.

Beijing – In China, after almost three years, the end of the zero Covid policy was declared: the government justified the reversal by stating that corona infections with the omicron variant no longer cause serious courses of Covid 19.

However, the situation in hospitals and crematoria looks different: The British research institute “Airfinity” estimates more than 5,000 deaths in China from corona infections. There are said to be up to one million new SARS-CoV-2 infections every day. According to the institute, the current surge is expected to peak in January and March 2023, with up to four million new infections per day.

The corona wave in China could have global effects

In Germany, politicians are now warning of the global consequences. Jürgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has called for the suspension of all scheduled flights “to and from China”. “Explosive Covid numbers in China caused by failed Chinese government policy are threatening the whole world with a new wave of infections,” Hardt said Publishing Network Germany. The CDU politician added: “We must not repeat the mistake of three years ago”. “Only when we are sure that there is no threat of a new, dangerous mutation from China should we resume air connections,” the CDU politician said in regards to the RND.

Janosch Dahmen, health policy spokesman for the Greens in the Bundestag, has campaigned for more frequent use of masks in Germany in view of the number of corona infections in China. “Not only due to the development in China, but also due to the other respiratory diseases in Germany, it is important that we use the mask much more indoors, completely independent of which rules apply,” he said. RND. Dahmen was also concerned about possible new variants of Sars-CoV-2.

The virus is out of control and the head of state Xi Jinping is silent

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently stressed that the coronavirus pandemic is by no means over: partly due to developments in China. WHO needs more detailed information on the burden on China’s healthcare system. China must learn to improve data collection – on hospital admissions, oxygen supply, intensive care units and deaths, stressed Mike Ryan, WHO emergency aid coordinator.

Now it’s important to increase the vaccination rate locally, says Ryan. Many older people in particular are not sufficiently protected from the corona virus. (do with dpa/AFP)
